I slow my breath and concentrate so intensely as to see the individual hairs behind the shoulder of the animal. My crosshairs settling in as I hold…one more easy exhale…The unknowing squirrel scurries across the branch and launches itself to the next oak. I slowly hang my rifle back onto the holder and I ease myself back down onto the seat of my stand and finish the last couple bites of my lunch.

It’s no secret that Wisconsin is a top tier and destination deer hunting state. Hunters from across the country venture to Wisconsin every fall to chase the elusive whitetails that fill the landscape. The Badger State has had plenty of Boone & Crocket and Pope & Young deer taken being that it’s one of the highest harvesting states of those records every season. The nine-day gun deer season is about as big of a tradition as the holidays. As the woods turn into blaze orange, businesses literally shut down, and the sight of seeing a hunter’s “trophy” in the back of the truck is just the daily norm. We are fortunate to live in a state with a good population of whitetails, but we are even more fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to access hundreds of thousands of acres of public land. For the third time in less than a year, the U.S. Congress will attempt to pass legislation that will allow the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wyoming to control their wolf populations without interference from the courts. Previous legislation was strongly supported by Wisconsin Senators Baldwin and Johnson and they will likely support the new proposal. This latest legislation was introduced into the U.S. House by Representatives Sean Duffy (R-WI), Collin Peterson (D-MN), and Liz Cheney (R-WY). Cheney is the daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney. Wisconsin has been unable to hold wolf seasons for the past two years due to a federal court decision in 2014 that returned wolves to protected status. Continue Reading

It’s Friday, November 27, 2015 of the Wisconsin gun deer season. Not many hunters out and even fewer gunshots heard. I’ve hunted with gun and bow for 46 years now. I clearly remember that deer season meant “nine” days, not just opening weekend and maybe a day or two during the week, but nine days. It’s tradition! Hunters sure don’t hunt like they did years ago. I give my dad credit for all his guidance in teaching me how to hunt at a young age. I believe in never giving up. You have to put in the time and effort to be successful; learning hunting skills that only come with experience. The thrill of the hunt has never left me. Continue Reading
