How to Set up an AR-15 for Hunting?
THE PROPER SETUP FOR A HUNTING AR-15
AR-15 rifles have been growing in popularity for other purposes besides home defense and recreational shooting for a while, but one of the questions asked often is how can i set up an AR-15 for hunting?
The AR-15 is a versatile rifle and since the upper receiver is readily interchangeable it can make a good hunting rifle. you want to consider the barrel length and caliber, so that you can make sure that you’re set up correctly for the game you’re pursuing.
We would recommend going with a 20 inch barrel that is long enough to have an accurate rifle as well as short enough to be able to remain efficient and maneuverable. It will also be light-weight.
Optics
One of the most important parts of any rifle is going to be the optics you choose to put on it. You’re going to want at least a 10 power scope with a good objective for hunting. If you’re looking for larger game like deer or hogs, you can adjust as necessary. Your AR-15 equipped with a scope is going to be a deadly hunting weapon.
Caliber
Some states do not want a .223 for deer hunting purposes. They may believe that the caliber is too small. If this is true, then you may need to purchase an upper that is chambered in a larger caliber. If not, the .223 is sufficient to kill a deer, especially with the right shot. You’re going to want a higher grain bullet though.
Some additional calibers that will fit into a .223 chamber are below.
- 6.5 Grendel
- 6.8 Remington SPC
- .300 AAC (Advanced Armament Company) Blackout
- .450 Bushmaster
- .458 SOCOM
- .50 Beowulf
All of these calibers offer some benefit, whether that’s harder hitting or longer shooting. The 6.8s increase your range and allow you to shoot a little further with a harder hitting bullet. These will shoot further than your .223. For short range, you’d want to look at the .300 AAC Blackout. While you’ll need to be close for kill shots, this will be a bullet that will take down game.
